Vinnie and Gazza raise money for male cancer charity

28 January 2010

An autographed print of one of English football’s most iconic images has sold on auction site eBay for £366.85 with all proceeds going to the nation’s leading male cancer campaign, Everyman

The notorious photograph, featuring former Wimbledon hard man and Celebrity Big Brother contestant, Vinnie Jones, manhandling England legend Paul Gascoigne’s privates was autographed by both players to raise funds for research into testicular and prostate cancer.

The image was donated by the Goals Soccer Centres’ Teesside branch following their recent participation in the inaugural Keep Your Eye the Ball Charity Cup; a nationwide 5-a-side tournament hosted by Goals Soccer Centre branches to raise money for the Everyman Male Cancer Campaign.

‘The eBay auction was a great way to catch the imagination of football fans and we’d like to thank everyone who bid for this legendary piece of football paraphernalia,’ said Everyman’s Jon Street. ‘We’re delighted with the amount raised we’d like to thank the Teesside branch for their amazing support and for going that extra mile with their fundraising.’

Teesside Goals raised a further £300 for Everyman by staging a silent football match, with cash penalties for every time the silence was broken. They also held a Xmas auction at their in house bar with a prize of a VIP night out complete with 3 course meal and limousine transport.

Goals Teesside branch manager, Kash Patel, commented: ‘Everyone at the Teesside branch has had loads of fun raising money for Everyman. The auction went amazingly well and it’s great that the proceeds are going to help fund such an important cause.’

Notes to Editor
• Prostate cancer has overtaken lung cancer to become the most common cancer in men, affecting more than 34,000 men every year in the UK. One man dies of prostate cancer in the UK every hour, a total of about 10,000 men a year.
• Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in men aged between 15 and 44, with about 2,000 cases a year in the UK. Incidence is increasing dramatically - by almost four-fold in the last 50 years. But thanks to advances made at Everyman, testicular cancer is 99 per cent curable if caught early, and with treatment the overall cure rate is 97 per cent.
