WHAT A LOAD OF BALLS! London charity walk for Testicular Cancer
11 July 2009
Clacton-on Sea testicular cancer survivor, Darren Couchman, is embarking on a sightseeing tour of London with a difference on 11 July in aid of the Everyman Male Cancer Campaign. Darren will be joined by Dr Chris Steele MBE from This Morning, fellow testicular cancer survivors and friends to make up the 100-strong crowd taking to the streets of the capital for the awareness raising Testicle Tour Walk.
Armed with dozens of Darren’s signature giant, pink fluffy testicles, these private parts protestors will meet at the London Eye then march along the eight-mile route which will include famous landmarks such as Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square.
Along the route they will take a break at Covent Garden to join professional tenor Ezra Williams, himself a testicular cancer survivor, and his accompanying band in a special testicle-themed rendition of Nessun Dorma.
Jetting in specially to join his band of ball bearing brethren will be a testicular cancer survivor from USA, as well as Testicle Tour patron and This Morning’s Dr Chris Steele MBE, who will start the event.
‘Testicular cancer is often seen as a taboo subject, however Darren wants to break down this barrier by injecting a bit of fun into his fundraising events while at the same time delivering an important message. I will be there on 11 July to officially start their unusual event!’ said Dr Steele.
Last year Darren took his Testicle Tour across the country to various ‘crown jewel’ themed places including Ball, Penistone and Shaftsbury, to raise awareness and funds for the UK’s leading male cancer campaign, Everyman. He is looking to follow the £5000 he raised last year, by raising a further £5000 for Everyman with this year’s event.
Darren, who travels around the country giving awareness talks, hopes this year’s event will better last year’s efforts:
‘I’ve had an amazing response since last year’s event both from people interested in getting more information as well as men who themselves have suffered from testicular cancer. I hope the humour will again help to get a serious message across and encourage people to check themselves.’
The Testicle Tour walkers will gather at 10:00am on Saturday 11 July at the London Eye with Dr Chris Steele MBE officially starting the walk at 10:45am.
The Everyman Campaign is run by The Institute of Cancer Research to raise awareness of, and fund research into, testicular and prostate cancer at The Everyman Centre – Europe’s first and only research centre dedicated to male cancer.
